Americas Cup 34

Exhilarating stuff! These AC72 catamarans are literally rocket ships floating on foils…flying along at speeds upwards of 40 knots in 20 knots of wind, around an amazing San Franciscan race track wedged between Alcatraz and the prime tourist strip along the north shore (including the Presidio, Fishermans Wharf, and the Embarcadero), and stretching from the lee of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the Pier 27 race village with the Bay Bridge beyond.

The cats have tremendous speed and power, generated from a 40m high articulated wing and lifting foils about the size of a surfboard that create up to 15 tons of lift through a gybe – imagine three adult elephants planing on a single surfboard!

To put the speed of these yachts into perspective, they’d finish the Mykonos Offshore before morning Elevenses and they’d finish the average twilight course for Division 1 ready for a beer at quarter past six!

Racing starts at about 10pm SA time. Be sure to check it out live on the website www.americascup.com or on the smart phone app…and follow all the skinner on the blogs as well as scuttlebutt and sailing anarchy!

It’s first to 9 wins, with the score now 3:1 to Emirates Team New Zealand, and with Oracle Team USA also to be docked two points for previous indiscretions. So it is really NZ 3:-1 USA.

The next races are scheduled for Tuesday after a rest day on Monday.
