Etchelles Invitational Regatta 1-5 August 2015 Royal Thames Yacht Club

As a Royal Thames Yacht Club reciprocal club, we would like to invite you to attend our annual International Etchells Invitational- The Gertrude Cup, which will run from 1st – 5th August 2015.

Please find attached the NoR and entry form, further information is available at, here you will also find the film of the 2014 inaugural Gertrude Cup won by Jeremy Thorp from Antigua Yacht Club who will be defending his Cup this year.


Amendment to NOR


Registration and practice race is on Saturday 1st August followed by 4 days of racing in the Solent with yachts berthed in Shepards Marina in Cowes.

The intention is to have 11 windward/leeward races. The teams keep the same sails but rotate hulls to ensure fairness. There is on-the-water support to assist with any boat maintenance.

The weight limit per team is 285klg or 627lbs with 3/4 crew. The helm must be a Corinthian but there are no other restrictions. Substitute crew can be allowed if needed.

The only equipment you need to provide is a VHF.

The entry fee is UK £3,900 per team, this includes the whole team’s evening meals (casual dress) as well as the Gala dinner at the Royal Yacht Squadron (jacket and tie).

Accommodation should be readily available from the 1st August at the Royal London Yacht Club, or Royal Ocean Racing Club Cowes (formerly the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club), or or

One of the Cowes fleet partner’s will be available each day at 1000 for coffee at the Royal London Yacht Club and help in planning the day with suggestions and information.

We also have a 3 day tour of London (see below) for the partners/wives, where they will be very welcome and looked after for a London sightseeing and shopping tour before being escorted down to Cowes in time for the Gala dinner at the Royal Yacht Squadron.


SATURDAY 1st August

Check in at Royal Thames Yacht Club in the heart of London overlooking Hyde Park.

You can arrive anytime from 0600 and leave your luggage there until your ensuite single room is available.

You will meet our Etchells representative  at 1600 for a welcome drink and orientation. Dinner can be at RTYC or elsewhere at your choice. The rest of the day is at leisure.

SUNDAY 2nd August

Breakfast at the club.

At 1000 Jo Baddeley will meet you at the Club for the first of two morning guided tours. She is an experienced Blue Badge Guide and you will find her tour entertaining and informative.

Starting from the club in Knightsbridge you will walk through historic Hyde Park, to Hyde Park Corner, then on through Green Park to Buckingham Palace. The tour will continue down the Mall, taking in Clarence House, the London home of Charles and Camilla, and St James’ Palace, the home of Kings and Queens for over 300 years.  You will  then cross St James’ Park  to Horseguards Parade then past the Cabinet War Rooms (Churchill’s underground bunker in WW2).  Parliament Square will be the next stop, with Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey; then on up Whitehall to see the Cenotaph, Downing Street, and The Banqueting House, finishing in Trafalgar Square.

Your afternoon is at leisure and could be spent exploring the nearby shops and market of Covent Garden. The National Gallery and  National Portrait Gallery are also nearby.

MONDAY 3rd August

Breakfast at the club

At 1000 meet Jo at the club.

Today’s tour will take you inside Westminster Abbey (built in the thirteenth century). Afterwards, an interior visit to the Cabinet War Rooms is a real treat – not only to see the secret rooms where Churchill met with his Chiefs of Staff in WW2  but also to see the Churchill museum. The tour ends at Trafalgar Square.

The rest of the day is at leisure

TUESDAY 4th August

Breakfast at the club

You will then be escorted to Cowes on the Isle of Wight to reunite with your partner and attend the Gala dinner at the famous Royal Yacht Squadron.

NOTE: The costs of  accommodation, breakfast, welcome drink, the guide, entrance to War Rooms and Westminster Abbey, are all included. Excluded are costs of other meals and transfer to Cowes.

The cost will be £500 per person.
