Open Course Racing

Open Course Racing

Report by Andrew Collins

Twelve boats took to the water for our very first Open Course race. This format is designed to be suitable for smaller or less experienced crews by having longer legs and fewer manoeuvres. It is the perfect opportunity to sail with friends and family in a fun race. We had a mix of experienced racers and cruisers in the fleet.

As we all know, winter sailing in Cape Town often provides the best conditions. It might have been good to have a few extra knots of wind, but what is not to love about flat seas and a gentle breeze that is consistent across the whole bay. The first beat from the Bridge Hut start to a laid mark off the Radisson Hotel was the usual tactical one where big gains can be made by choosing the right time to tack back to the shore. Thereafter the course was straight-forward but those boats that were able to carry their spinnakers on the tight reach from Landfall to Woodbridge built up a big lead.

Without volunteers we would not be able to offer as much racing as we do at RCYC. A big thank you to Tina Schmidt and Neil Gregory who assisted Hilary and Kerry on the bridge. The next Open Course is on 15 September. Put it in your diary and come and join in a fun format of racing. It is sure to grow in popularity.

Class A – 1st Tenacity

Class B – 1st Yolo, 2nd Monkeys in the Mist, 3rd Rockstar

Class C – 1st Farmed, 2nd Let’s Go, 3rd Julie III

Our intention is to set courses that will take around three hours to complete and will send boats to different parts of the bay. We have nearly 400 yachts moored at RCYC and only 30 or 40 race regularly.

Open Course Racing is the perfect format for those who have never tried racing before to dip their toe in the water. Or even just a good reason for those who would simply like to spend an afternoon on the water in the company of friends and fellow sailors, to slip their moorings.

For the regular racer, Open Course Racing is the perfect opportunity to take on your arch-rivals, but in a less stressful format with the emphasis on camaraderie.

Please diarise these dates, sign up a few mates and come and join your fellow club members for a great day on the water.
