The band for May 5 is:
- Andrew Ford (Piano)
- Amy Campbell (Vocals)
- Butch Rice (Drums)
- Jan Hough (Bass)
The quartet is led by the legendary Andrew Ford on keyboards. Andrew is one of the top professional musicians in South Africa. He runs his own recording studio, and is an accomplished arranger and composer. He played at RCYC at our March gig. He is a graduate of the College of Music, as is the vocalist, Amy Campbell.
Amy comes from a long line of jazz musicians. Her father Mike Campbell is now a professor at UCT, and started the jazz studies program at the College of Music, while her grandfather was Colin Campbell, who was known for his arranging and composing skills at the studio he ran at the time. He was also an excellent pianist.
Butch Rice, on drums, started his career in music many years ago, and has played with both Mike and Colin Campbell. Now backing Amy, he has played with three generations of the same musical family.
On bass is Jan Hough, a very experienced and talented player. Starting out as a trumpet player, he switched to bass early on. He and Butch first played together over 40 years ago.
Together, the band members have many years of musical experience. They concentrate on playing straight ahead, foot tapping jazz, that gets the heads nodding. Expect to hear traditional jazz standards performed in a swinging way.
Paul has organised another interesting, inexpensive and efficient menu, and bookings are recommended.
