Lufthansa Twilight Series : THE WRAP

Lufthansa Twilight Series : THE WRAP

[incorporating one cool image of the Flag Officers, who were meant to have a twilight race last night!!]

Ahoy Lufthansa Twilight Sailor

Our last special twilight date with the setting sun took place last night:

The Blown Out Flag Officers’ Team Twilight Race, and The Overall Series Prizegiving for the Lufthansa Twilight Series.

This date is not just the Flag Officers Race, it is also the culmination of the Lufthansa twilight series, with an overall series winners’ prize giving, and of course the lucky draw for club members who participated in the Lufthansa Twilight Boarding Pass promotion, with the chance of winning 3 great prizes on the night.

Together, we extended a warm welcome to Danica Helfrich, marketing manager for Lufthansa Southern Africa, the proud sponsors of the Lufthansa Twilight Series.

Thank you to the bridge and the sailing office and marina manager for race management and scoring. Thank you to the course setters, mostly from the sailing committee, but also volunteers from within the club sailing fleet. I hope you have enjoyed the efficient processing of the results and the reporting on each race sailed in the series. We all acknowledged these contributions with a warm round of applause…

From the onset of the series, we placed a very strong emphasis on participation, and moved away from giving prizes to the winners each week, replacing that with random participation prizes. A big thank you to all the participants for making this such an easy task…

Thanks to Lufthansa for embracing some other “enhancements”, like the yellow Lufthansa battleflags for the weekly divisional race winners, and the lovely Lufthansa Hostesses, in their purpose coutured “Betty Draper” dresses, inspired by the tv series “MadMen”.

Here are some overall statistics from the event series:

Overall, there were 91 yachts that participated. We saw the birth of two new divisions, being a stand-alone Division 3 Spinnaker fleet and Division 4 Cool Cats.

In the first series, sailed in support of Community Chest, there were 7 out of 9 race dates sailed, and 77 yachts participating across 7 divisions. We proudly donated R15,000 to the Community Chest at the conclusion of the series in December.

In the second series, sailed in support of the NSRI, there were 7 out of 8 race dates sailed, and 71 yachts participating across 6 divisions. There were no cats at all in the second series.

We welcomed the NSRI to accept a donation from R15,000 from all the participants in the second half of the Lufthansa Twilight Series. We thank you NSRI for your work in saving lives on the water, and maritime rescue.

We had a remarkable hit rate of 14 sailed dates out of the 17 that were planned.
