Ahoy budding race officers
20 members from a number of sailing clubs around the Western Cape attended a SAS endorsed Club/Provincial race officers course at RCYC on Sunday.
Some of the regional sailing clubs that had members in attendance included SBYC, HYC, ZVYC, FBYC and RCYC. A big thank you to Di Hutton-Squire and Bruce Keytel for presenting the course on behalf of SAS; to SAS for providing the material and lunch; and to RCYC for providing the venue and reception refreshments. Thanks also to a number of experienced hands who attended like Alan and Millicent Keen, Lance Burger and Ron Keytel, all who added their knowledge, feedback and experience in the interactive learning sessions.
We look forward to feedback from the exam that was held at the end of the course presentation.
Without any visions of race officer grandeur, this certainly was a positive step forward to understanding bridge and race management more fully, and a stepping stone for attendees to better contribute to race management if called upon. For a number of us in the course, putting this into practice by assisting will be the next step forward.
It is super important to continue the culture and effort of positive race management at club level, and for all sailors to acknowledge the voluntary contribution of the race management committee in most of our club racing. Creating a supportive environment for this will only improve collective on- and off-water sailing knowledge.
Personally, I learnt a great deal. If I flunked the exam, I look forward to a second shot rewrite with unbridled joy!
Yours in competent race management…Come Sailing!
