A short report from Gui and the team:
After an eventful drive up with the boat to Deneysville Vaal Dam we sailed in the Nationals.
As a team we decided to use the nationals at the same venue a week before the worlds as a practice regatta.
This definitely helped as we tried various different sail configurations but the downside was we had to retire from most of the races as changing sails during the regatta is not allowed.
With the Vaal Dam being notoriously fickle at this time of year we new consistency was going to be the key and this was definitely the case for the first day with four starts ,of which most were under black flag, with no finished races.
The following three days consisted of a total of eleven races which allowed two discard races.
With an eleventh and a seventh as our discards and fifteen points clear we were in good shape for the last days racing.
Unfortunately the last days sailing started enshrouded in mist with plenty of breeze with the mist causing a postponement .We were in a waiting pattern until it cleared.
The Vaal Dam lived up to its reputation with the visibility returning at the expense of the wind.
By two thirty it was all over with David Rae taking the obligatory swim.
We would like to thank Harken for their assistance and the J22 organizational body for a well run regatta.
Out of 43 boats competing we also had another RCYC team on the water achieving a great 8th place. Well done to Marcus Progli, Chris Gough and David Shilton.
