RCYC Commodore’s Ball & Awards Evening | 21 June 2025
On Saturday, 21 June, the Royal Cape Yacht Club honoured its top sailors at the annual Awards Evening during the prestigious Commodore’s Ball. In celebration of RCYC’s 120th anniversary, the evening embraced a glamorous early 1900’s and Gatsby theme, with the venue elegantly styled in the club’s navy and gold heritage colours.
Guests were treated to a decadent three-course plated dinner, curated by Chef Alan and his team, while outgoing Rear-Commodore Inside House, Johan Erasmus, added his signature charm and humour to the evening as the MC. The 1920s atmosphere was brought to life with vintage décor, a whiskey and cigar lounge, and roulette tables – a nod to the indulgence of the era. Guests were wowed by flapper-style dancers, straight out of the Roaring Twenties, as well as a stylish Jazz band.
Outgoing Commodore Alan Haefele reflected on his time at the helm before officially handing over the reins to incoming Commodore Dave Garrard. The night also celebrated excellence in sailing, with each winner receiving a bespoke navy-and-gold medallion, echoing the evening’s centenary theme.
