On Saturday, 18 July 2026, RCYC proudly hosted the inaugural Mandela Day Challenge, a community‑driven initiative that united members, partners, and volunteers to make a tangible difference both on and off the water.
In collaboration with Dive Action and UCT Marine Studies, the club organised a marina clean‑up at “Cat Corner.” Divers and members dedicated their 67 minutes to removing litter and debris, with an ambitious target of 670 kg. By the end of the challenge, more than 500 kg had already been cleared—an outstanding achievement that reflects the dedication of everyone involved.
The day also carried a charitable focus, with The Haven Night Shelter chosen as the beneficiary. Members purchased symbolic “sleep vouchers” at R75 each, providing five nights of accommodation for someone in need. Our goal was to support 67 people in honour of Mandela Day, but thanks to the generosity of our members, we surpassed expectations and raised enough to shelter 75 individuals.
The club was alive with energy and camaraderie throughout the day. Some members joined the clean‑up armed with pool nets and gloves, while others supported by purchasing vouchers, enjoying a boerewors roll, or simply sharing in the spirit of the occasion. Together, we embodied the true meaning of Mandela Day—community, compassion, and action.
