The Harken Round Robben Island Pursuit Race, held on Saturday, 11th October, was a day of both excitement and challenge for the 62 registered boats and 380 competitors who took to the water. The club buzzed with activity as crews arrived early, their enthusiasm undeterred by the thick fog that rolled in simultaneously. The Sailing Office faced a daunting task: initiating the staggered pursuit starts with countdowns despite having no visibility. It was a test of coordination and patience, made even more complex by the unpredictable wind conditions.

As the fleet made its way around Robben Island, many boats encountered windless patches—particularly on the far side of the island—where they were left drifting for extended periods. These frustrating lulls led to a significant number of retirements, with the bridge crew receiving 33 messages from boats withdrawing from the race. Only 18 boats managed to finish, a testament to their perseverance and tactical skill.

Despite the challenges, the race concluded with well-earned accolades. Phil Gutsche and Rick Nankin, aboard Windpower, claimed line honours with a commanding performance. They were followed by Philip Baum on Nemesis in second place, and Eckhard Marshing on Hollard Jacana securing third. In the class divisions, Atalanta, skippered by Theo Yon, took first in Class B, while Hors d’oeuvre led the Class C category.

The participants were treated to a delicious Burrito and ice cold beverage thanks to our incredible sponsors Harken SA.
